Being home all day with kids can make you feel isolated and wonder if you're the only one spending 20 minutespeanut butter and jelly sandwichesor collecthundreds of erasersbecause your daughter tried to make a rainbow loom even though she (or you) doesn't know how to do it.

A routine example of 18 months

Here's the basic routine I've used with all my kids. After breaking their morning nap around 18 months, they all followed a similar schedule until they were 2 years old and beyond.

Some babies stop sleeping long before they are 18 months old, and some still take two naps. In my experience, 18 month old babies canusually go with a napbut they still need a little more sleep than their older brothers.

I use the term loosely to indicate that I intentionally interact with children. Sometimes we do any preschool program, and other times we color or play with clay.

screen time

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics... 18-month-old babies really don't need itCanadian deerscreen time. With my eldest we've never done that, the younger kids in our family come in and out of the room a lot with the TV on so that's what I'm going through.

18-month-old babies are fun, but they also require a lot of work. Here is a summary:

  • Choose a routine you can stick to every day. One that isn't too tight or too loose to make your days chaotic.
  • Teach your child to follow their own routine. I do it usingprintable routine diagrams as shown here.
  • Be consistent but flexible. Things like illnesses and meetings will happen, so anticipate them.

The key to a good routine

It may be so simple, needless to say… but the key to a good routine iskeep a routine. Memorizing everything in the right order can be difficult at first, but once you get the hang of it, the routine becomes second nature.

It can seem very difficult to start creating or stick to a routine if you don't have one. Here are some ways you can learn to stick to your routine.

Put away the sanding!

If you need a visual aid to help you remember the routine, and at the same time you want to teach your little one to follow the routine (so you don't have to scold him), I recommend using our routine charts (you can see below) or something similar that can be made at home.

You hang them in the designated place (bedroom for morning routine, bathroom for toilet routine, kitchen fridge for meal routine, etc.), and then use them to help your child learn independence and self-regulation.

Set alarms or reminders on your phone

While you don't have to live and die by a clock, setting your phone, watch or timer can help you stay in control of routine transitions.

We can often be so engrossed in what we're doing that we forget and are an hour or two out of naps and now struggling to get a nap.

I set alarms on my phonethis show on my watchand it works for us.

Exercises

As with anything, if you want something to work, do it. Continue what you have decided to do. If it doesn't work, change it up a bit and move on. Go forward.
